Around 15 minutes northwest of downtown Wenatchee, lies the small unincorporated community of Monitor. A cross between a village and a small town, Monitor gets its name from the historic USS Monitor, the US Navy’s first commissioned ironclad warship which successfully held its position against the Confederate States Navy’s Virginia in the Civil War’s Battle of Hampton Roads in 1862.
There’s nothing very naval about Monitor, Washington real estate however, though the community does lie on the banks of the Wenatchee River, several miles west of its confluence with the Columbia. With a land area of just over two and a half square miles, Monitor is a peaceful town of less than 400 people whose main industries have nothing to do with warships and practically everything to do with agriculture. Like many other communities in Wenatchee Valley and its surrounding areas, fruit-growing is an important aspect of life in Monitor. In fact, orchards and other farmland make up most of Monitor, Washington real estate.
Also like many other communities in the region, Monitor can be found in an area that’s well-known for its scenic beauty. Lying in the midst of the Cascade Mountain range’s eastern foothills, Monitor has magnificent views of the surrounding hills and mountains, as well as of the silvery Wenatchee River.
Lying across from the community is the Wenatchee River County Park which features camping and picnic areas, furnished cabins and rafting areas.
