Cashmere

Cashmere Real Estate

How the city of Cashmere got its name is as rich as the community itself. Initially the town was called Mission, after a log church built by a Catholic missionary in 1874. Because there was already another town in the State of Washington called Mission, the name was changed to Cashmere. According to historians, the town judge felt that the community's natural beauty was as valuable as Kashmir in India, so he named it after the luxurious, imported animal product. Incorporated in 1904, the vibrant rural village of Cashmere, Washington is now flourishing with more than 3,000 residents.

Acknowledged as the geographical center of Washington State, Cashmere is located at the foot of the Cascade Mountains, delivering unparalleled views to its residents. The Wenatchee River flows right through the middle of town, and the Columbia River flows to the east. This abundance of irrigation water has enabled this small community to become one with rich farmland, abundant wildlife, vast orchards, and bountiful agriculture.

While you can expect an average home price of about $120,000, Cashmere real estate runs the gamut from single-family residences, apartments and town homes to new construction, rentals, beach homes, log homes, golf homes, luxury homes, and much more. Properties are quite affordable, for example, a three-bedroom, two-bath farm on 2 acres featuring gardens, a four-stall horse barn, and a three-car garage, can be yours for $375,000. Only about one-third of all Cashmere households have children under the age of 18 living in them. Here in Cashmere, it is not uncommon to find the wonders of nature in your backyard, as deer, elk, and native fowl all reside in the area.

When you invest in Cashmere real estate, you'll find a number of opportunities to actively participate in recreational activities such as golf, bird watching, swimming, river rafting, mountain climbing, and backpacking. The Cashmere area offers some of the best conditions in the United States for paragliding and mountain biking. Devil's Gulch, described as "biking heaven" by most mountain bikers, is a single-track trail that takes you on an uphill tour of more than 20 miles of magnificent scenery, water, and wildlife. Devil's Gulch runs all the way to the Mission Ridge Ski Resort, just outside of Wenatchee. Cashmere also boasts a 9-hole golf course surrounding fruit orchards and the breathtaking Cascade Mountains.

Cashmere has been recognized as one of the first cities in the State of Washington to be named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Association. In days of yore, settlers planted and cultivated 80 different species of trees for shade in an area that enjoys 300 days of sun. Today, the town is blessed with large trees ranging from silver maples to English oaks, which can be viewed on a two-mile walking arboretum tour that starts and ends on Cottage Avenue, in the heart of downtown. In 2001, the city implemented a tree partnership program to purchase and plant selected trees on private property in the city. Homeowners meeting requirements each received a 12-inch tree, increasing property values and air quality, while buffering wind and reducing air conditioning expense.

In addition to all of this, Cashmere is best known for manufacturing the world famous Aplets and Cotlets, a chewy fruit and nut candy, coated in powdered sugar, which originated in the 1940s. At the Chelan County Historical Museum and Pioneer Village, visitors get a chance to become involved in the apple harvest process, as well as enjoying samples from the kitchen and the candy production area. The museum also houses one of the best collections of pioneer artifacts in the Northwest.
