How the city of Cashmere got its name is as rich as the community itself. Initially the town was called Mission, after a log church built by a Catholic missionary in 1874. Because there was already another town in the State of Washington called Mission, the name was changed to Cashmere. According to historians, the town judge felt that the community's natural beauty was as valuable as Kashmir in India, so he named it after the luxurious, imported animal product. Incorporated in 1904, the vibrant rural village of Cashmere, Washington is now flourishing with more than 3,000 residents.

In addition to all of this, Cashmere is best known for manufacturing the world famous Aplets and Cotlets, a chewy fruit and nut candy, coated in powdered sugar, which originated in the 1940s. At the Chelan County Historical Museum and Pioneer Village, visitors get a chance to become involved in the apple harvest process, as well as enjoying samples from the kitchen and the candy production area.
